Torsten Tschacher

Torsten Tschacher is lecturer for Tamil language and culture at the University of Goettingen. He received his PhD in South Asian Studies in 2007 from the National University of Singapore. His main interests are the history of religion in South India and Tamil literature with a focus on Islam and Muslim communities, as well as historical and contemporary links between South India and Southeast Asia. More generally, he is interested in South Asian history in the wider context of the Indian Ocean and in Islam in South and Southeast Asia.

Currently, he is engaged in a study concerning the engagement of Tamil Muslims with the public sphere in colonial Singapore. In addition, he conducts research on various aspects of Islamic Tamil literature and Muslim religious practice in South India from the sixteenth century to the present. He teaches contemporary written and spoken Tamil as well as classes on Tamil culture and society.
